Why should you pay attention to your hormonal balance?

Dr Samantha Jones, 20 years of experience

We can all agree that being healthy is a #1 priority for every single person. Hormones affect everything from blood sugar to blood pressure, growth and fertility, sex drive, metabolism, and even sleep. There is no doubt that hormones are powerful.

Having a hormonal balance is one of the most essential keys for our overall well being. I am a firm believer that proper supplementation can have a big impact on treating hormone-related disorders.

Today’s lifestyle is very challenging for both men and women, as different factors can have a major  impact on our hormone health and fertility. Such factors can be stress, weight fluctuations, bad food and drink choices, and other different, tense life situations. That’s why it is VERY important to take care of YOUR HORMONES - the absolute key for your health and wellbeing!

But what happens when there is an imbalance in certain hormones?

Hormonal imbalances are the leading cause of infertility in women!

A hormonal imbalance happens when you have too much or too little of one or more hormones. This can lead to different hormone-related conditions - temporary or chronic. Some of the most common conditions include: irregular menstruation, infertility, hormonal weight gain, hormonal acne, PCOS, thyroid disease, diabetes. All problems that should NOT be overlooked and measures should be taken.

What are the signs of a hormonal imbalance?

Signs and symptoms may vary from individual to individual. However, it is important to pay attention to how you feel and to not neglect these main signs:

  1. Irregularity in menstrual cycles

  2. Infertility

  3. Acne

  4. Unexplained weight gain

  5. Mood swings

  6. Low sex drive

  7. Insomnia

  8. Bloating

Hormonal Imbalances and Female Fertility

Hormone levels in both men and women must be in balance in order to have a successful conception and pregnancy. In fact, infertility is a broad-based phenomenon, with 186 million people around the world suffering from its effects. When hormone levels are out of balance, infertility may occur…

I strongly believe that the foundations of fertility are in our control and the right supplements can help with that. I know it may seem too good to be true, but believe me - it is possible!

Hormonal imbalances and female fertility go hand-in-hand because the key to conception are your sex hormones. They are the ones who control your menstrual cycle and the function of your reproductive organs.

The primary fertility-related hormones are progesterone, estrogen, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) and they all work together in a balanced system in order to support your reproductive cycle and conception.

Other highly important hormones are thyroid hormones and insulin which can impact your ability to conceive.

About 13% of couples have trouble getting pregnant when the woman is age 30 and younger. The main reason fertility decreases with age is because the quality of a woman’s eggs declines as she gets older. And, as women are born with all the eggs they will ever have, older women have fewer eggs.

Hormonal Imbalances and PCOS

PCOS is a common disease that affects 5–21% of women during their reproductive age.

Women with PCOS often have elevated androgens, insulin resistance, irregular periods, weight gain, difficulties getting pregnant, hair and skin problems. Many of the most common signs and symptoms of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and anovulation are caused by hormone imbalances.

What’s interesting is that 90% of anovulation cases are caused by PCOS. Besides, 1 in 10 women of childbearing age have PCOS.

I often hear from patients looking for options in managing their PCOS. The first thing that comes to my mind is inositol - a vitamin-like ingredient which is found in tissues throughout our body and plays an essential role in cell signaling.

The most important types of inositol are myo (MYO) and d-chiro-inositol (DCI) and they are especially beneficial for women with PCOS as these two ingredients are proven to improve both metabolic and reproductive aspects. Inositol is involved in various bodily processes,  including insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, and egg maturation.

Inositol can help the cells become better at responding to insulin, which means the body secretes less and blood sugar balance is improved. Women with PCOS have lower DCI which differs from the natural ratio 40:1 MI to DCI. The reason is that these women are less efficient at converting myo-inositol to d-chiro-inositol. Happily, supplementation with MI and DCI could help restore normal levels. What’s more, elevated androgens can also be reduced.

Hormonal Imbalances and Menstrual Cycle

A regular menstrual cycle is generally 24-38 days, and menstrual bleeding lasts for up to seven days. Irregular menstruation occurs if your cycle lasts less than 24 days or more than 38. This condition is often associated with an imbalance in the hormone levels.

Your menstrual cycle is controlled by a combination of hormones and ovulation, and, when your ovaries don’t release an oocyte (mature egg), anovulation occurs.

Inositol supplementation is best for promoting menstrual regularity,  improving quality in ovulation and normal ovarian function to women.

If you are reading this article, this means that you truly care about your health as a woman and want to find a way to balance your hormones and improve your overall well being completely naturally.

Hi, I’m Dr Samantha Jones, reproductive endocrinologist. While I was in medical school, I suffered badly from PCOS and had nearly all the symptoms. I thought nothing was able to help me because, believe me, I’ve tried many different methods. Finally, I was able to win this battle and now I feel like the best version of myself. I promised myself that I would help others, too. Now, I can proudly say that I have found the weapon against hormone imbalances that will help women improve their reproductive system, regulate their cycles, support healthy ovulation and weight management.
